My name is Syana ❤️️ . I was born in Kelantan, Malaysia but grew up all over the country since my family moved a lot! By the time I was a teenager, we lived in 6 different states – I went to 8 different schools throughout my adolescent years. I was probably the happiest person in the world when my parents retired and finally, settled down at a nice cosy home in Selangor.
I’ve been married to Mifa for a few years now. In 2015, he was transferred from his Kuala Lumpur office to Singapore. When we got the news, we decided to give long distance relationship a go. We would meet on weekends and holidays while taking turns travelling back and forth between KL and Singapore.
Long story short, 6 months later, I took a sabbatical leave from work and move to The Lion City of Asia.
Adjusting to life in Singapore is neither difficult nor easy. I love it here, yet I still wake up some mornings wearing my grumpy pants – feeling useless, worthless, angry – you name it. I was lucky to have an understanding and supportive husband by my side. Bouncing back to my cheerful self didn’t take long. It also helps knowing that KL is just a one hour flight away. Yassszzz! 🙂
Anyway, now that I have all the time in the world, I wanted to use it to learn something new. It started with piano lessons on Youtube but well…I can now confirm that I have no musical talent what so ever. Some friends back in KL suggested going to baking classes but I just shrugged them off because hellooooo….I don’t bake! I don’t even eat desserts. Seriously. Nevertheless, after a couple of months, I got desperate for some human interactions so I went ahead and signed up for a tea time treats baking workshop. You can read about it here. The rest as they say…was history 🙂
Not only I met some wonderful people, I went home that day with a few phone numbers and kept in touch with most of them. I also have a new profound love for baking and half a year later, I started taking orders for dessert (check out my Instagram @sugar.philia). On top of that, I began teaching myself the art of Korean buttercream flower cake decoration. I posted my journey about it here. In March 2017, I was delighted to be a guest instructor at The Batter Room, a local baking studio in Tampines, to teach Korean buttercream flower module. That was a wonderful experience!
On a different note, I began blogging in 2004 back when everybody was still on Friendster. LOL! Then life got busy and I blogged on and off on Blogspot. It went well for awhile until I got frustrated with all the limitations I was facing from blogging on a free domain. Finally, at the end of 2016, I gathered some courage and took a leap of faith – bought myself a domain name and set up Jemput Makan. This is where I will be sharing my interest on buttercream flower, kitchen triumphs, failures and a thing or two about myself.
So here we are! Welcome to Jemput Makan.
